Introducing Brendan Luis

Ok, so it's been a month since he was born and I know I'm a little late to the ballgame, but I've been busy. Better late than never, right?

I'm glad to say everything went swimmingly with Brendan's arrival. And remarkably, no anxiety attacks for me on the day of, nor did I have high blood pressure. In fact, when the nurse took my bp as I was prepping for surgery, it was in the low 100s. It wasn't until afterward that my bp went up, but more on that later.

The day of the surgery was surreal, to say the least. I almost felt like I was preparing to go on a trip or something since we meticulously planned everything. Finally, around 10:15, my mom Jon and I loaded up in the car and drove over to Kingwood Medical. There, the wait wasn't too long before the called me in.

From there, it was pretty routine stuff -- they had me change into a gown, took my vitals and inserted an IV. Then, the nurse asked a series of questions, including, "Are you wearing contacts?" Damn. Busted. I knew I wasn't suppose to wear contacts for the surgery but I figured, hey, I went through the worst case scenario three years ago with contacts in and I did just fine. She told me to take it up with the anesthesiologist. So when he arrived I told him just that. We bantered back and forth finally agreeing that if they had to put me to sleep, I'd take them out. Fine.

Fortunately, it never amounted to anything since the c-section went smoothly. It was done in like 10 minutes. And this time around, since I was much more lucid than last time, I felt every tug and pull. It was weird to say the least.

Finally, at 1:11 our little boy was born, weighing 6 lbs 10 ounces, and FULL of hair. My God, I've never seen so much hair on a newborn before. The nurses couldn't resist putting it in a mohawk. And the best part was that he was perfectly healthy.

My body, however, once again betrayed me. Two days postpartum, my blood pressure shot up, reading 170/90 at one point. Talk about frustrating. So the doc put me on some bp meds and I had to stay on it until about a week ago. Finally my bp started getting back to normal so the doc gave me the ok to discontinue it.

I've also been grappling with some pain around the incision. I had this searing burning pain at one end of my incision that wouldn't go away. Turns out I had a hematoma (like a bruise). Glad to report that that also has somewhat gone away.

So I'm finally beginning to feel somewhat normal, despite the occasional night sweat. The first two weeks was brutal. I had to change my shirt three times in the middle of the night because it would be soaking with sweat. Ugh.

That being said, we're good. I'm finally starting to venture out with Baby B and he seems to enjoy going out. He just sleeps through the whole excursion, unlike Jordan, who would scream bloody murder the minute I put him in the car. Oh--and Jordan loves his little brother. He's constantly giving him kisses and saying cute things like, "Aww...look at his little hands." I don't know if it's because we have a newborn now or what, but Jordan seems so much bigger and older to me now. It makes me sad to see my little boy growing up so fast! But that's the thing with kids, right? Before you know it, they're 18 and out the house. Sigh...

For now, I'm relishing my little newborn.
